A study involving affiliates of the Yale Environmental Humanities Program assessed the consequences of land displacement and forced migration on present-day Native American tribes. The paper, “Effects of land dispossession and forced migration on Indigenous peoples in North America,” appeared in Science, 2021. Researchers assembled new datasets from historical research and Indigenous Studies scholarship to quantify the economic, environmental, and social damage left by settler-colonialism. It concluded that lands to which Native Americans were forcibly migrated are currently more vulnerable to climate change and wildfires, lack natural resources, and place its occupants at greater exposure to contaminants.
